How I use the classroom rules:
If a student needs a reminder about a rule, I ask, “What is our rule?” After the student says the rule that he/she is breaking, I say, “That’s right!” and ask the student to show me what that looks like. If the student continues to break the same rule, I tell him/her to move to the Calming Chair. When the student is calm, I talk to him/her about the expected behaviors and he/she rejoins the class. If the matter is more serious, I will discuss his/her actions using the “What I Worked On Today” worksheet. I write any necessary comments to clarify for parents. This paper will go home with the student for a parent signature. The student is then praised for showing he/she can follow the school expectations. In class, breaking a rule is a 'mistake' that we can work together to fix and I stress that the calming chair is simply a place to calm down so we can fix our mistakes.
Classroom Procedures:
Students are expected to bring their folders to school each day and put them into the "folder basket." I go through each folder to check for lunch money, notes from home, permission slips, etc. Students will bring this folder home each day with any homework, newsletters, notes from the classroom, lunch choices, etc. Please make sure this folder is checked by an adult each night and returned to school each morning. This will be an important home-school communication tool.
Each day students will have time for a snack. Please make sure your child comes with a healthy, nut-free snack each day. In addition, students can bring in a water bottle to be kept in the classroom (we do not have a water fountain our room).
Your child will bring home a lunch menu each month. Please go over this with your child if he/she is buying lunch, so that he/she is prepared to choose a lunch each morning.
We have a bathroom in the classroom and students may use it when needed. I will also set aside times during the day (snack, before/after lunch and recess) specifically to use the bathroom.
Students are expected to wash their hands before eating, and after using the bathroom. We will go over how to wash our hands in the first days of school.
